Domyenn: African-American Women and the Microcelebrity Lifestyle

Presenter:
T Sanders-Criner
Presentation type:
Paper
Abstract:

How do the intentions of an individual’s social media presence impact the way one presents oneself? This presentation explores the evolution of the expression of celebrity as it relates to controversial thought and and platforms for marginalized people groups, specifically black women. Using the Instagram microcelebrity, @domyenn as a case study, we explore her journey. Celebrity appears to take a path as follows: when low, there is very little risk for allowing controversial presentation of one’s profiles; as celebrity increases to micro-celebrity status, with intention to yet increase, opinionated presentation is limited in order to be palatable to the general public. Finally, when the threshold of celebrity is reached, controversial thought can be introduced once more. How does this relate to the information we take in from our biggest idols? How has social media alter the influence of black women? What does this say about the opinions that are expressed in the mediasphere?

Scheduled on:
Saturday, November 10, 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm
