This qualitative study investigated a performance anxiety in a professional orchestra in Japan. This study particularly focused on the life history of 20 individual musicians and explored how they encountered and dealt with the anxiety in their learning and performing experiences. This study revealed how orchestral musicians perceived anxiety in the social context in large ensemble settings and dealt with them reflexively. Consequently, professional musicians overcome their anxiety by putting longitudinal/ continuous effort to deal with uncertainty and enjoy them unlike amateur musicians or student level performers.
