For more than a decade the newspaper industry has been in decline as losses in both circulation and advertising revenue have been marked by the closing of several large metro dailies, such as the Rocky Mountain News and the Baltimore Examiner, and by the loss of more than 25% of its work force since 2001. Some of the factors contributing to this decline include the inability of the industry to make a profit from their news websites when so much of Internet advertising is free as well as the difficulty in producing both online and traditional print newspapers with reduced or minimal staff members. This study examines the declining newspaper industry through the lens of two large metropolitan dailies in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and focuses on the contrasts between them and the factors contributing to one newspaper prospering while the other declines.
