In the early 21st Century, men’s rights organizations and communities have been growing in popularity and influence, especially online. This may be due to the concomitant growth and influence of feminist web sites and organizations, especially when we consider that so many men’s rights groups present themselves as ideologically anti-feminist. The men’s movement in the United States and Europe is more diverse than its popular-cultural face, however. The first men’s movement was decidedly feminist, and the mythopoetic men’s movement has generally remained politically neutral. This presentation will look at the history of the men’s movement in the West and consider its various branches, philosophical underpinnings, modes of activism, and current condition. It will also consider possible future directions of the movement(s).
