Architect Designed Monuments in Budapest Cemeteries Ca 1900.

The golden age of architecture in Budapest, Hungary was the result of the monumental event of the Hungarian Millennium Celebration in 1896. The eminent architects of this period, in constructing what would be one of the great European capitals of the early 20th century, all designed cemetery monuments for the city’s most prominent families.

The cultural, business and banking communities of Budapest at this time were mostly Jewish. The most outstanding examples of cemetery architecture are preserved in the several Jewish cemeteries of the city. Architects such as Lajta, Lechner, Ybl, and other practitioners of the Hungarian Art Nouveau movement, as well as more traditional architects, are represented by significant examples. This paper will describe these open air architectural museums as they remain in Budapest’s cemeteries and examine their fate today.
