In the fall of 2012 Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood debuted on PBS. Based on the Neighborhood of Make-Believe from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood teaches a new generation about feelings and coping with emotions. This presentation will explore the similarities and differences in this re-imagining of the familiar faces and places on the trolley stops. Many of the parents of the target audience of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood grew up with Mr. Rogers, and this nostalgic reboot provides an opportunity for parent and child to share a space in the Neighborhood of Make Believe as they explore themes of self-affirmation, non-violence, tolerance, and a variety of feelings. Along with providing a comparison of the two neighborhoods, this presentation will also look at the different productions within the context of popular culture, both past and present.
