High Density Popular Culture Crash Course

Saturday, November 7, 11:45 am to 1:15 pm (Wyeth C)

After the enthusiastic response to last year’s Crash Course in Baltimore, we’re offering another round of lightning presentations on some of the latest trends in popular culture studies. Our panelists will give us the word on subjects like experimental uses for live streaming video, Tumblr and fandom, corporate Twitter-speak, the latest Star Wars marketing campaign, the Pope’s recent visit to Philadelphia, and more zombies, because there’s always something new to be warned about… What makes the crash course fun is its speed: our panelists have exactly five minutes each, and then it’s GONG! and on to the next. It’s a great opportunity to check out what is new in other areas of pop culture. See you there!

Titles as the program goes to press: Pamela Detrixhe, Pop(e) Culture: Pope Francis’ Visit to Philadelphia; James A. Hodges, Experimental Uses for Live Streaming Video: Networked Presence and the Online Arts; Katelyn Gendelev, Mashups & Crossovers & Ships, Oh My!: Tumblr as a Site of Participatory Fandom; Meredtih Guthrie, Corporate Twitter Gets Weird; Colleen Etman, “That’s No, Moon, It’s a Marketing Ploy”; Jessica Robinson, Undead Obsessed: Finding Meaning in Zombies; and Tom Grochowski, Ack! The “Facebook Return” of Bloom County

Session chair

Thomas Grochowski (St. Joseph's University, New York)
