Pearl S.Buck, best known for her novel The Good Earth, produced several collections of short stories throughout her life, and additional volumes appeared at the hands of her publisher, John Day Company, after her death in 1973. This essay will examine several of these later collections, aiming toward a re-assessment that suggests that although their main attraction may lie in their “autobiographical touches,” as Paul Doyle, author of the Twayne’s Authors Series volume on Buck suggests, they display as well an exploration of the complexities and challenges of making art while maintaining healthy family and marital relationships.
